Summer Reading

I'm tired and I have to be up early tomorrow so my TORCH reports will have to wait. In the meantime, here are two summer reading programs I ran across that look fun. We'll be doing one (or both) of them as I'm going to let the girls decide which they want to do.

First, the Beverly Hills Library's Summer Reading Club runs from June 18th to August 13th. Children in the 2nd grade and younger draw pictures of their favorite scene from a book they listened to/read. Older children keep a reading log and receive stamps for completed books. Each picture/stamp earns a piece of a mobile for the child to decorate. When they've completed their mobile, they can bring it in and get their picture taken. There is also a party on August 15th. Obviously this is only doable for people living near the BHPL.

There is also a Summer Fun Reading Program being offered through the Homeschool Buyers Co-Op. For this, you record the hours read each day and receive entries into drawings held throughout the summer. (One hour of reading = one entry.) At the end of the summer you get a PDF certificate to fill out with your child's total hours. You do have to be a member of the co-op to participate, but that is free and you can find some good deals on supplies and curriculum from them.
