TV Turn-off Week in Review

Well, I can't say that our experiment was a success. It wasn't a failure, by any means, but we didn't go totaly screen-free. A few things came to light, though,

It would have been a lot easier had music been available to listen to. During the sefirah, we don't listen to music so the silence or never-ending drone of talk radio just gets to you. There were a couple times when I was very tempted to turn on some music and just dance.

We really need a decent outdoor area to play and explore in. There are a few things I can do to our patio to make it more fun, but I need to find a park that is easy to get to, has some nice open space and play areas. Then we need to make a standing time to hit the park.

Overall, I don't think we will be a TV-free family. At least not for now. But we will continue cutting back on screen time and making TV more of a family-interactive event. I used to allow each girl to pick one show to watch each day. So it was 1-1/2 to 2 hours of TV a day for them. Plus any movies that we would watch together or as a family. Instead, I find that I can tell them that we have time for one show and allow them to choose one together to watch and they are fine.

As always, it was a learning experiment and I'm glad we did it even if we didn't acheive the goals I had hoped for. It is also something to mark off of my 101/1001 list and gives me a starting point for next year's goals.

My Poor 101/1001

Its been awhile since I posted about my 101/1001. Actually, it has been awhile since I even thought about it. Yet tonight, as I handed a homeless woman $2.00 I remembered my 101/1001 list and my desire to donate a dollar a day to charity. What makes the list so forgettable?

Well, times change. I change. My life changes. Goals change. And I don't have my list posted anywhere except on the computer. Our of sight, out of mind. So I'm going to print it out and post it alongside my daily routine and cleaning lists. (Have I mentioned how much I'm grooving with Flylady lately?) Now for the big question...do I revamp the list and actually reflect where I am today? If so do I reset the date? My list is currently set to be completed on November 14, 2010. Tough choices.

In the end I've decided to revamp it but leave the end date. I did reset the daily/weekly/monthly items so that they are current. I'm surprised how much time we have. Some of the larger traveling things will likely not get done, but everything is pretty doable.

Without further ado, the new and improved 101/1001 list:
  1. Go on a cruise
  2. Save $5.00 a week for Israel fund (0/96)
  3. Go skiing
  4. Take a RV vacation across the US

Call a radio talk show. Check!

(From my 101/1001 list.)

As I was driving to the store, I was listening to Patt Morrison and they were talking about turning off the computers, Blackberries, iPhones, etc. for a day as a break. Basically disconnecting.

My first thought was, "That's a cool idea! I should challenge some online friends!" Oh the irony.

I went shopping, got back intot he car and they had just started talking about unplugging when I had a duh moment. I already do disconnect once a week.

Shabbat.

So I decide to call. I talk to the screener and he puts me on hold. I'm parked on the side of the street listening to the radio over my phone. I'm rehearsing what I'm going to say. I'm getting giddy.

Then Debi on the 405 gets on the phone. She isn't observant, but doesn't check her email on Shabbat.

No fair! She stole my comment!

So I'm going over another way to say it. And a Rabbi also on the 405 gets on the phone.

He stole my comment too!

Now I have nothing to say. So I thank the screener when he gets back on the phone to tell me that the other two callers pretty much covered it.

I will say that I was a bit pissy about Patt's description of disconnecting because of Shabbat as being easier because you put the responsibility for your actions onto something else. (Yes, I'm paraphrasing.) Anyone who has ever observed a Shabbat knows that while you keep Shabbat because of the commandment, the keeping of it is a human endeavor.

HaShem isn't going to keep my hand from picking up a ringing phone. My promise to HaShem is.

101 in 1001 Update: June 1, Part 2

Now, to expand on a couple of the items (highlighted in red ont he list).

Update the girls’ blog monthly (1/33) I think this one can be deleted since I've merged all the blogs and become more of a regular blogger.
Learn to use a wrap correctly. D-O-N-E! And I must say I love wrapping!
Donate the girls’ old toys. A lot of them are gone as part of my big de-clutter and also to get the girls' room reaady for them.
Grow out hair to donate to Locks of Love Still going. Probably another month until I can get it back into a good ponytail. Then it will be smooth sailing until the very end.
Make holiday binder I've got just about everything together. I'm hoping to assemble it during the big summer lull between holidays.
Try eating raw for 1 week Thinking about deleting this one. I've been doing more reading and really find myself taking more of a Traditional Foods approach and enjoying it. But, then again, it is only one week.
Back-up family pictures Done
Go to a scrapbooking crop regularly (At least once a month) Having a hard time finding one. :(
Re-evaluate items on my Ravelry queue monthly. (4/33) Did you notice my nice, shorter Ravelry queue? I learned the power of "fave."
Re-evaluate my 101/1001 list monthly (3/33) Trying to actually do it twice a month along witht he update threads on the Ravelry group.
Have enough knitted dishcloths to not use sponges (10/50) I seriously love my dishcloths. And I made some out of plyarn for Shabbat. Ooooooohhhhhh......
Complete the monthly KALs I’ve committed to. Sadly, I've pretty much dropped out of all of them. Maybe time to rejoin some?
Grow tomato plant Well, the girls are. But I'm helping! LOL
Return phone calls as they come in. Check
Return Netflix as soon as I watch them or realize I don’t really want to watch them. Been doing this. Love that I don't feel like I'm wasting my money on DVDs sitting at home. Also a great way to have a variety of movies for the girls to watch.
If I don’t read email groups weekly, unsubscribe. I've been doing well, but it seems like when I decide to drop a group, it picks up. LOL
Respond to one email a week in each of my email groups. Again, doing well and I've made a couple of playdates with the local AP group. So much fun!
Use canvas bags when shopping I am happy to say that my plastic bag bin is consistently low now.
Find some “me space” in the house. Done. :) It isn't much, but it is mine and I use it.
Get rid of the grubby clothing from my closet. Happy to do that. Bought some cute wrap skirts to replace the grungies. I've noticed that I stain my shirts pretty easily, though. The joys of motherhood. LOL
Get rid of 1001 clutter items (137/1001) Truckin along as part of my de-clutter fest. So nice.

I am so ready

to cut my hair. I love it short, but am growing it out for Locks of Love as part of my 101 in 1001. I hate hate hate this stage I'm at now where it is too long to be cute, but too short to at least put into a ponytail. So I'm left with shag sticking out from under my hat and scarves. I can get it into 2 goofy pig tails, though.

101 in 1001

I've started this really fun project. The home page is here. The basic idea is to make a list of 101 goals to complete in 1001 days. I started on January 1, 2008 so my end date is September 28, 2010. You can see my list on the side bar, but here is a more detailed version. Notice #1. LOL It is a lot harder than it sounds!

At some point this may end up at its own blog. I was trying to decide, but I think this would also be a great starting point for a new Book of Me and there are crafty things on my list, so I'm putting it here. If it starts taking over, I'll reconsider.

Until I figure out how to do strikethrough on Blogger, the red font means done.
