Big Bummer

At the end of last year I began working on the girls' birthday dresses. You'd think that would have been enough time, but with Purim, Pesah and general busy-ness I find that I won't be done.

To be honest, it is my own fault and had I pushed I could have finished, but after making two bodices I just couldn't muster up the desire to make the third. I wanted to work on something else and told myself "no new projects until the dresses are done" which meant that no knitting was done.

My new goal is Shavuot. I want them done and the girls can wear them to my sister's graduation party later that month.

After I finish I'm going work on one of my sweaters and then start the girls' winter jackets. That way I can take a lot of time and enjoy the process. I'm also thinking this will be the year when they don't get the exact same sweater. That should make it more enjoyable for me. I hope.

Making My List

On Ravelry there have been quite a few threads posted about making lists and planning for 2010. A couple of them really inspired me so I sat down and made a list of what I'd like to make in the coming year. From there I went through an matched up projects to yarns that I have on-hand and made a list of what yarns I would need to purchase. I've also joined a knit-along following Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac so I organized my queue into a rough order that I want to work in.

One of the inspiring threads turned into the group 10 in 2010. The idea is to pick 10 yarns that you want to work with and 10 patterns you want to make and doing those projects in 2010. You could end up with 20 projects, though, because the yarns don't have to match up with the pattern, though I tried to match them up as much as possible.

So, here is my list of knitting for 2010 (not in order):

  1. Elizabeth Zimmermann's Green Sweater
  2. Fishtrap Aran Hat
  3. Jane Austen Dress (for girls' birthday)
  4. Jane Austen Shrug (for girls' birthday)
  5. February Baby Sweater
  6. February Lady Sweater
  7. Maltese Fisherman's Hat
  8. Ganomy Hat
  9. Tri-Cornered Hat
  10. Mitered Mittens
  11. Mocassin Socks
  12. Pi Shawl
  13. Nets to hang fruit (An ornament from Knitter's Almanac, but I'm going to make them for sukkah decorations.)
  14. No Vest for Old Men
  15. Knitted Garter Stitch Blanket
  16. Child Surprise Jacket for girls' Hanukkah 2010 gift.
  17. A pair of socks for each of the girls and for Aba.
  18. Four pairs of socks for me.
  19. Ten dishcloths
  20. Fiona's Top (made to dress-length) for girls' Posh Hashanah gift.
Nice and ambitious, eh? Actually many of the patterns should be very quick and things like socks and dishcloths are great travel projects.

I was going to link all of the patterns, but they are all Ravelry links. So just go to my queue and click through there. Easier for me. ;)

Falling Out of Love: NaKniSweMo Update

At knitting night on Thursday i busted out my Sundog Yoke sweater and went to town. When I got home I did some math and I don't think I'm going to be able to finish with the yarn I have. i'm debating frogging it or working as far as I can and then deal with hunting down more BFL for whatever is left. (I got this from a co-op and I'm Facebook friends with the hostess and a couple participants so I might be able to score more.) Of course, this means that I won't finish on time. So why bother?

Instead I've decided to start Amelia. I have the yarn and the pattern is free and the Ravelry notes mention that the sizing is generous so I'm confident I can do the 42" and not have a problem. The notes also mention it is a quick knit and reading the pattern it seems so. There is enough "stuff" going on with the twisted rib and stockinette patches to keep me interested yet it is very simple technically and looks cute.

I'll wind the yarn tonight and get everything ready and then start tomorrow. Technically I suppose I get until December 7 to finish it.

Sundog Yoke Sweater

I cast on my NaKniSweMo sweater today and got 1-1/2 inches done on the body. I changed my cast on and hem so I frogged 2 rows and then had an emergency needle repair to do so I feel a bit behind already. LOL

I'm doing a Seamless Yoke Sweater with Elizabeth Zimmermann's instructions and her EPS (Elizabeth's Percentage System). However, instead of doing a colorwork yoke I'm using some hand-dyed that I have in my stash and making a yoke ala Sundog by Kristi Schueler from Twist collective. The body is solid natural Blue-Faced Leicster yarn. I'd like the cuffs to be natural, too, but I'm worried about yardage. I'm working with yarns that I can't get more of. I have 16 ounces of the BFL, another 8 ounces of a similar BFL that I'm going to use in the yoke, 8 ounces of multi-colored hand-dyed and 4 ounces of brown hand-dyed for the yoke. It sounds like a lot, but they are all worsted/heavy worsted.

February Lady...Sort Of

I've been really happy with my progress on my February Lady Sweater. When I neared the end of the ball of yarn on the body, I went back to the sleeves and in a week I had them finished. I have two more weeks to work on the body before I start to panic.

The sleeves are a bit shorter than I think I want, but I'm going to wait to wash and block before I make my final choice. I haven't used this yarn before, but I have used the heavy-weight version for the girls' Josephs and it g-r-e-w a lot. Also, people on Ravelry have been reporting growth after blocking. If need be, I can take out the cuff (only 10 rows of garter) and add in some more lace repeats.

Trying it on, though, was so awesome! My first sweater all for me!

Baby Carriers, FLS, Pandemics, and a Crocodile

For those of you following my exploits on Twitter or Facebook (and if you aren't, why not?) I'm sure you are sick of hearing about my infatuation with this carrier and my love-hate relationship with February Lady Sweater. I can only warn you about more FLS updates to come, but the carrier will not be joining our home. First, I really can't justify the expense even from my mad money when the girls are rarely worn. The carriers I use nowadays are ones that don't suffer from being shoved under a car seat, in the stroller basket or rolled into a ball and jammed in the diaper bag.

As for FLS, I've finished the ball of yarn I was using on the body so I'm starting the sleeves. I figure those will go very quickly since they are smaller and knit in-the-round. Also, once I have them done I can try it on and decide how much more torture I have on the body. As always, I LOVE the Dream in Color yarn and the Knit Picks needles.

This "pandemic" has our home in a bit of lockdown. Originally Aba had declared, "No unnecessary trips with the girls." Which would mean we would be locking in the house for a couple weeks. Ummmm....no. Baruch haShem I received a copy of Dr. Jay Gordon's email on the subject and that and some thinking seems to have calmed him down some. Instead of lockdown we are back to our usual "flu season" routine. Water on your hands, water in your body and stay away from sick people. I've also got some ferments going, but I stopped all of them before Pesach and didn't jump right back in after so we're a bit behind in that department. All-in-all I think we are pretty well set in that department and forsee a trip to Disneyland in our very near future.

Finally, I share with you a picture of Shira's crocodile. I am so amazed at how often the girls are making representative art. From Chaya's smiley face, block houses, boats from cups and bowls to this corocodile made from some Duplo blocks they found in a box upstairs. I'm thinking it is time to get them some sketchbooks for our next trip to the Getty Center. Then we can pick some things to draw. Please ignore the tomato sauce all over her face. They had "pasgetti" for lunch and she felt she had done a good job washing up after.

FLS wins!

I ended up getting a skein of each yarn out and asked Aba which one I should make a sweater out of. His first suggestion was to make a striped sweater...no. Then he chose the Dream in Color.

So I've cast on, frogged, cast on, knitted a few rows and I've just messed up half of a row. So now I need to pick back through 2 misplaced raglan increases or I need to frog again.

Once I fix that I need to mark the right side so that I don't mess up the increases again.

A huge thanks to everyone who voted!

HELP ME PICK!!!

I'm just about done with the girls' jackets (just need the zippers) so I'm ready to move onto my own sweater. Now I need to choose one. I have yarn for these two and I really like them both and I can't decide. So help me pick!

First: February Lady Sweater in Dusky Aurora.

Second: Linden in the same yarn in the photo.

Leave a comment and let me know! (I'll be setting aside time to wind yarn tomorrow evening, so vote soon!)

I'll take a pic of the girls in their zipper-less Josephs tomorrow.

Knitterly Stuff

It occurred to me last night that I haven't posted anything crafty lately. So, here is a crafty fix.

I've been plugging away at the girls' Josephs. I got everything finished last night and it is now drying. Hopefully I can start seaming them tonight.

Chaya
Shira

Batya

You might notice that Shira's jacket (the red one) seems quite a bit larger than the other two. That was my big error on these pieces. I knit Chaya's first and entered it in Ravelry. Then I let it sit for a while before I cast on Batya's. I knit her back and part of the right front when I decided to update Ravelry. Then I noticed that I was using 13s instead of 17s as listed. I measured the backs against each other and they were roughly the same so I figured I was fine. I finished Batya's and used 17s when I cast on Shira's.

When I was photographing them last night I figured out what I did. I didn't mix up needles. I used 13s on Chaya's and wrote down 17. Luckily Shira is the largest of the girls. Batya might have some length issues with the sleeves so I'm going to seam Chaya's and try it on Batya so I can add some length as needed.

Next time I need to be more careful with what needles I'm using. I'm thinking a piece of blue painters tape on the reverse with all the info on it so that if the items gets separated from the pattern or needles I have a record. Or I could just double check my notes on Ravelry.

I've also swatched up Cambridge Jacket for Aba and Pearl Buck Swing Jacket (Ravelry links) for me. Though I have a few other sweaters I'd like to make for me so I haven't decided which one to start with. I haven't touch Absorba. I need to get to that, though. I have all of the Ugly Betty eps from this season saved on the DVR so I might force myself to work on Absorba while watching them.

Update

I feel bad for not updating in a while. Things have just been a bit difficult here and I've not felt any desire to post. I have been writing, though, so there might be some of that popping up. I figure I'll give a nice overview update of things here.

Potty learning is driving me nuts. I keep reminding myself and the girls that we aren't in a hurry and there is no pressure. But really. This is getting ridiculous. B will sit on the potty for an hour, dance and play naked for an hour with no accidents. Then she asks for a diaper while doing the Ivegottogoreallybadly dance. If you sit her on the potty she won't go. Put a diaper or learners on her and she goes. Put regular panties on her and she will sit on the potty and go. With the panties on. So just when I think I can't handle it anymore and I'm going to put her back into a diaper and put the potty away she will just sit on the potty and go.

Last week I was worrying that she might be getting a UTI. She would hold herself and cry like she was in agony. This happened with diapers, learners, panties or naked. I upped her liquids and she stopped doing it. I'm really just at a loss with her.

The other two. Ugh. C is the least problematic. She will happily wear a diaper or sit on the potty. She has had success once and was very happy, but hasn't repeated it. S will cry that she wants to sit on the potty any time you are putting panties, learners or a diaper on her. It doesn't matter how long she's been sitting there. But after all the sitting, she will get up and pee on the floor.

I do have a stack of prefolds on the shelf and the girls have to help clean up their accidents. I also have them put their diapers, learners and panties in the laundry when they decide to take them off. That only seems to really effect Batya. I still think she will be first. I just thought it would be a little more consistent than it has been.

Sleeping is getting better. We had a few nights where I thought we had fallen into a good routine, but then it got messed up with some rough nights and now I know that we are getting colds. It started one night when S was going to sleep and told me that she wanted the little bed and that C would sleep in the "green bed."

For those not in the know, for the past year or so B has slept in the "green" bed alone and the other two have slept in the "yellow" bed together. B would wake up 3 times at night (to come to bed, for a diaper change and then when Aba gets up) and one of the others would wake up. Whomever was left in the bed alone would sleep fine.

So, I thought about it and we put S and C asleep in separate beds and B with us. B woke up once for a diaper change. That was it. So we did it again. And Again. After three nights we figured we had success. Then we had a everybodywakeupandclimbintothebigbed night. And another. Then last night they all went to bed at 6:45 and S woke up around 9:00 with a stuffy nose and some sneezing. The decongestant got her pretty wired but Aba and I made a big show of doing our bedtime routines and getting into bed. Batya woke for her diaper change and S slept fine once she got to sleep.

Transitioning out of cribs is happening soon. It is taking me forever to get the juk room (girls' bedroom) cleaned so I'm going to change my method. We are taking the guest bed apart and then in the space created I'll just box the junk up and move it down stairs. Then we'll move the mattress upstairs. We just need to figure out when we want to do it because I don't want to put the bed there and have them play with it. So we need to look at the calendar adn holiday schedule and figure out when the best time is.

Schooling is all figured out. We're going to homeschool for preschool and possibly kindergarden. After that we will decide. Nothing is starting until they are three. Until then, I'm just going to keep doing some light Montessori work with them. I'm careful not to do certain things. I don't call it work, I don't use mats or rugs and we don't wear aprons. I want those things to start when we start formal homeschool because I think they are really great visual cues that it is "school time" as opposed to just play time.

I'm taking this time to find and make supplies and lesson plans. I have some fun ideas. We've also been working on the basic things like courtesy, setting the table, cleaning up, washing hands, helping each other and some of the beginning Montessori work like color tablets, pouring rice, spooning, sorting, lacing and matching. The girls will even ask for certain things by name. "I want to lace, Ima." So grown up!

Knitting is getting there. I'm busy working on B's Joseph. I fell in love with both the pattern and the yarn I used for C's so I purchased two other colorways. I have three sweaters-worth of yarn for me and two for Aba so I'm pretty set for the next year or so. I've cancelled all my YOTM memberships and don't plan on buying for quite a while unless something comes up that I need to make and need yarn for. I can't see that hapenning, but never say never.

Scrapbooking is getting back on track. I'm learning Photoshop so I can do more pages with that. I've also been scalping scrapbook supplies for the girls' art so I'm not feeling too badly about stuff I'll never use. My goal with all the craft stuff is to get down to a reasonable amount of basic supplies. I want to craft, not collect craft stuff.

Wow, Wow, Wow

I've been on some sort of knitting roll today! i'll finish taking pics tomorrow (I'm tired and my bed is calling) but I got a bunch done.

Thecapristhatwillbeverbefinished are all done and will get a wash with my next wooly wash on Wednesday. (Is it weird I have a set day to wash woolies?)

My Spring Cap is done. (I think I'm going to make more. It is so comfy and an easy pattern once you get into the swing of it.)

And I made a a face cloth out of TIG's YOTM chenille!

Next up is a skirty for the girls. I also have bits of washcloths in almost every room of the hose so I'd like to get them done. I'm knitting up a sample Shabbat washcloth for the Rav to okay (made from a grocery bag so it doesn't absorb water. Hence no worry about wringing it out.) I have a partially completed child's sock upstairs, too. And a Ribby Wrap awaiting buttons. And I'm working on block 4 of Harold...errr Absorba. (He reminds me more of a Harold.)

i also have some sewing and paper projects as well as something new in the works, but this is a knitting post so you'll have to wait! LOL

Booga Bag Update

It felted beautifully! I'm totally tempted to keep it for myself.
